The great outdoors

The weather has been absolutely great here for the last few days; beautiful sunshine, soaring temperatures and not a cloud in the sky. The kind of weather that makes you want to get outside, rather than staying indoors with your craft box! Usually I can’t persuade the kids to do anything other than watch TV or play on their computer games, so when they actually asked of their own accord if I had any good ideas for stuff they could do in the garden I was a little surprised, to say the least. Luckily, I always have my handy craft books nearby for just such an occasion…

We headed out into the garden, armed with just some sheets of paper and a sense of enthusiasm. After raiding the flowerbeds and borders for as many brightly coloured leaves, berries and flowers as we could find (and all without my garden-proud husband noticing a thing) we rendezvoused on the main lawn to start creating our nature pictures.

Basically, instead of using paints and a brush, you grab the “colour” you want from nature and just rub the flower, berry or leaf on the page to see what kind of a mark it makes. After a bit of experimentation, we figured out what made the best natural paints and started creating our own pictures. OK, none of them were going to rival Paul Horton, but we had a lot of fun and the kids can’t wait to have another go. Now all we need is another sunny day!
