Knit one, Purl one

Knit one, Purl one

I’m learning to knit at the moment – for about the tenth time in my life. The chances of me ever being a super speedy knitter like my Grandma are about as good as my husband finding software that actually works!

My Grandma was an ace knitter, churning out patterned jumpers, cardigans and stuffed toys; all without taking her eyes off whatever soap opera was on the TV at the same time. I glanced away from my knitting for one second to see what was happening in the hockey game on TV the other night and there is now a huge hole where I really didn’t wanted a huge hole…

I’m so bad at knitting I have actually joined a knitting class to get the basics down pat before I actually try and tackle any knitting projects. The plan is to knit a few scarves as 2011 Christmas presents (let’s not run before we can walk!) and then once I’ve mastered the basics, I can go onto hats, socks, maybe even a jumper or two by the time Christmas 2012 rolls around. I do worry that the knitting gene stopped with my Grandma though. My Mum tried to learn to knit when she was about my age and struggled even more than I do. She once made me a jumper that was two sizes too small by the time she got it finished and was covered in little flower patches to cover up all the holes and mistakes!

I’ll stick at it, though. Even though I have to concentrate quite hard on every stitch, I still find it quite relaxing. And it gives me a great excuse to disappear to my craft room when my husband is moaning about his software issues…
